How Does Train Horns Really Work - Types & Sounds
They scare me, I don’t know about you! We have all heard these loud blasts before, not good when you are trying to sleep. That penetrating sound and steady long lasting tone, its hard to mistake thats for sure.
It it designed as a warning sign for pedestrian and motorists a like. It’s a good warning sign at that! They can also be used to signal other trains as well. Even to the railway station and station masters.
In vehicles and and in trucks, air horns are used, but nothing quite as exciting as that train whistle. It really does stir the imagination like no other sound I know of. Trains in general evoke a feeling of nostalgia, but the sound of a train whistle always reminds me of the train trips I took as a kid. I grew up near a railway station, my grandfather was a station master for 40 odd years.
Just like with anything, there are people or hobbyists who collect all the different types of train whistles from all the different types of trains that have been around. There is actually quite a big market for this sort of item. There are clubs as well.
Air horns for all intensive purposes all work the same sort of way. The best way to explain how they work is like this. Picture a megaphone in your head. You know what they are. They work by way of magnets, a voice coil and a diaphragm. Once it is turned on, the diaphragm starts to vibrate and that causes the loud sound waves.
The air horn is a type of speaker as well, but it pushes air out instead. The air pressure causes the diaphragm (it has one as well) to open quickly and shut quickly. This happens many many times a second. This is then heard by our ears as the steady tone we all know.
Many fanatics can even tell the difference between different models of train horns just by listening to its particular tone. The train horn pitch is changed by many variables.
Such things as the diameter of the air inlet can determine the pitch and loudness of the horn. Also the internal components and the different bell horn material can also change the tone. It could be mellow or sharp and it could also be somewhere in between. Also and this is a big one, the size and shape of the bell horn can change the tone dramatically.
Air tanks are what supply the air horns with their power. These tanks cannot hold an infinite amount of air so they do need to be refilled by a pump. A good diesel air horn will need plenty of compressed air to work, so if you are thinking about buying one of these, you will need a good 25 gallon tank.
One of the biggest markets for train horns are those who drive pickups and of course those who drive SUV’s as well. There are scaled down versions that can be purchased for personal use on vehicles. These are very chrome in appearance and are extremely loud. Do not honk these in quiet streets.
These horns are also great for boating. You will need to check with your local authorities before installing this sort of horn on any vehicle as it may be illegal to use this sort of horn. Train horns can produce sounds up to 175 decibels.
A Close Look At The Amercian Flyer Train Model
The American Flyer is probably the most popular of all model train series. They did reach their peaks around the 40’s and another peak in the 60’s, they had been around for much longer then that. Their popularity is also skyrocketing today as well and they are I feel going to be around another 100 years!
A toy maker in Chicago called William Hafner, in the very early 20th century developed a model train developed on a clockwork motor, primarily for the use in toy cars. By about 1905 how ever he decided to put them into use in model trains as well. Good thing he did, the model cars sold no where near as well as the trains.
William Hafner and his good friend by the same name, William Coleman approached a small manufacturer of hardware, Edmonds-Metzel. They used this company to start producing clockwork toy trains in 1907.
They were first marketed under the name of Edmond Metzel trains, but because they were selling so fast and so well they needed a new name and they came up with the name of the American Flyer. This came about in 1910. Even the name of the hardware company they were using had also changed its name to incorporate the American Flyer name in it.
They started selling like hot cakes for a few reasons. They were quite cheaper then other popular makes of model trains at the time and because they were also quite a bit more realistic then more budget style model trains of the time.
Mr William Hafner left the partnership around 1913. He used the funds he had already made and started his own company. Colemans American Flyer Trains. It did well for quite a period of time around the first world war. There was little to no competition at the time due to the war efforts.
In 1938 right before the break out of the second world war, the founders son with the same name, who was in charge of the business after his father died in 1918 sold the American Flyer to a company called A C Gilbert Company. Gilbert already had experience in manufacturing toys, but had never done so with trains.
At the same time he also moved the company from Chicago were it was created to New Haven in Connecticut where he lived. He also began to drastically re design the American Flyer and turned it into an S-scale model train in 1939. This scale is a modification of the popular O scale or model which was then the leader on the market.
The S-scale was much smaller then the O-scale and this made it more popular with enthusiasts as it required less room to setup a decent track. The scale is 1:64, considerably smaller then the O-scale yet still very detailed and precise.
He also made another change in 1946 that improved the realisticness of the American flyer more so. Model trains, electric model trains at that time had been run on 3 rail tracks. Not realistic. He changed it so they ran on 2 rail tracks, much like their bigger counterparts. These tracks had 7/8th inches between each rail. This made the trains run better as well.
How ever, television was starting to take hold at this time as well. This distracted many from their hobbies they would usually spend their spare time on. Also at this time, discount chain stores came into play, discounting train sets that companies like A C Gilbert could not compete with. in 1962, Gilbert sold the American Flyer to Wrather Group. This company produced toys as well, but usually on a mass scale and tended to produce poor quality as well. Sales of course fell through the floor and in 1967 the company went bankrupt.
A major toy train maker and the market leader at time, Lionel Corp purchased the American Flyer. This company itself was having difficulty with finances as well and they also went bankrupt in 1969, so they sold off the rights to the American Flyer to another manufacturer, General Mills.
This company, General Mills, started selling some of the designs of the original designed Gilbert American Flyer, it how ever sold off everything it purchased from then Lionel Corp to Kenner, who then in turn sold the company to a man named Richard Kughn. This happened in 1985.
Mr Richard Kughn had great success with the company and design for 11 years, but he sold out in 1996 to a company called Wellspring Partners, who then took on the original name of Lionel and called themselves Lionel LLC, which still operates today.
The sell the S-scale American Flyer still. They were at first focusing on selling other scale models, but in 2002 they started selling more and more of the American Flyer.
The American Flyer toda is more then 100 years old and has gone through many different hands. It’s popularity is still going strong and while it fluctuates, this model train and scale is going no where fast.
Tips for Finding Stylish Ladies Clothing Online
When was the last time you battled your way through department store crowds just to find a nice outfit? The noise, the unhelpful staff, searching through racks and racks of clothing to find the right color and size …it can be a bit overwhelming. And then you have the change rooms, tiny cubicles with doors that rarely stay shut, where you struggle to turn around without knocking your outfits from the dinky hooks on the wall. Store change rooms are often badly lit, as well, so what looks decent in the store might look hideous in the light of day.
It`s a pain to go shopping in a store, which is why more and more women are opting for the online method, instead.
Online shopping makes it very easy to choose what you like. You can search by color, so only your favorites come up, select the style and choose your size from a drop down menu. It`s a far sight easier than searching fruitlessly through racks and racks of dresses only to discover they don`t have your size.
If looking for ladies clothing online seems a bit intimidating, don`t worry. It`s not difficult if you know how and there are some techniques that can actually help you find the right clothing faster.
- Know your style. Do you look better with fitted jeans or flared? Halter top dresses or A-line? Having a clear idea of what you look best in will help you find the right outfit. To help you out, some websites even offer a virtual model that you can customize to your body shape and size and even put your own face on. This can be helpful to see which styles look best on your body type.
- Search specifically for your size range. If you`re petite, look for dresses that are smaller and for plus sizes, be sure to add this to your search. It will eliminate the frustration of finding the perfect blouse, only to discover that it`s only available in sizes that wouldn`t fit you.
- Consider color matching. If you are on a budget or just don`t want the hassle of searching your closet for something to go with your plaid shirt, try choosing a handful of complimentary colors and a couple of accents and base your clothing searches and purchases on those.
- Look for coupon codes. When you find ladies clothing that you like, take a moment to do a coupon code search for that store. You can often save 10-15% simply by inputting a special code when you`re checking out.
- Opt for stores that let you return clothing. This way, you can receive the outfit, try it on in the comfort of your own home, get the opinions of friends and family, if you like and should things not work out . . . just send it back. It`s a hassle free way to check out your clothing and allows you to take your time trying on the clothing. There isn`t any line outside the door and you have plenty of space to change.
Online shopping for ladies clothing is easier these days than ever before. Nearly every store that you would normally shop at in the real world is available online and you`ll be able to take your time browsing, no commute to worry about! With all the advantages, it`s definitely worth doing your shopping online at home, any time of day or night and without all the crowds.
Don’t Forget About Storage Costs
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been in a meeting where the issue of storage costs comes up. What always surprises me is the laissez-faire attitude toward storage costs…”Storage is cheap and getting cheaper” some businessperson will say. And, for the most part, everyone else just nods their heads.
It’s the easy way to dodge a tough issue. Who wants to argue with the truth; in fact, the per GB cost of storage is decreasing and will continue to do so. But, what no one talks about is that the amount of information being created that needs to be stored is growing exponentially, and probably at a larger clip than the decrease in storage costs.
Thus, in relative terms, the cost of storing information continues to be the same, if not more, despite lower storage costs - especially for all those organizations still sadly stuck in the “retain everything” mode.
Talk to your infrastructure and operations professionals…these folks know that it costs big money to store all an organization’s information assets. These are the folks that roll their eyes when they hear everyone else talk about how cheap storage is getting.
And, these are the folks that must bend over backwards when that discovery request comes in and forces them to restore the cheap backup tapes (at close to $2,500 per tape), or gather the 100 GB of information off cheap storage (which then has to be processed at a cost of about $2,000 per GB). For these professionals, the cost of cheap storage comes in lost man-hours; for their organizations, the cost of cheap storage is born in too expensive eDiscovery.
I won’t argue that storage, in general, is being commoditized. But, that doesn’t mean we can just shrug off the cost. Because we continue to create more and more information, that relative cost of storage stays the same or rises.
The solution lies in creating policies that allow for the disposition of information and putting in place an infrastructure that allows an organizations to put the information it keeps on the cheapest storage possible, get rid of what it doesn’t need, and have the tools in place to conduct efficient eDiscovery.
What Are The Problems With VM Ware
Virtual machine applications such as Parallels, Virtual Pc and VM Ware are becoming increasingly popular as they allow users a number of options that would otherwise be unavailable to them for example a clean system for faster performance or perhaps the ability to test an application in isolation from your main operating system. Sadly the common hard drive is still a factor that needs consideration as fragmentation can cause data problems.
If you are fortunate enough to have very deep pockets then you may be using SSD’s or solid state drives. These still remain expensive and are out of the reach of most users who still have to rely (although getting much faster) on the slowest and some would say the most vulnerable technology in your computer- the hard drive. Hard drive fragmentation can cause problems with virtual machines and in some cases even data loss.
Hard disk fragmentation occurs when files are split in to multiple chunks as they are slotted into spare space on the hard drive. If you are running a solitary OS chances are you have already noticed considerable slow down in your system since purchase. Just imagine two or more OS’s running causing the same file fragmentation! Pretty soon your system could come to a grinding halt.
Fragmentation will not only slow down your computer or server but due to the excessive and unwarranted extra movement of the heads, the life of your storage device(s) can be seriously reduced. The problem is not only limited to single drives however, even if you have a very well specked raid set up, fragmentation can get so severe that the only viable option is data recovery or server rebuild.
Each operating system will have it’s own method of dealing with file fragmentation (or not as the case may be). Whilst Mac OS X will automatically defragment a file under the size of 20mb, windows pays scant regard to how badly files are fragmented. Other systems use a variety of different methods to combat the problem.
Defragmentation utilities can take care of this problem, however, running them practically ties up the machine until completion, slowing the machine to a crawl. So what can be done to remove this issue? There are a number of possibilities that can be tried.
Scheduling a defragmentation is a good bet as you can let it run whilst you are doing another task or perhaps out to lunch. Third party applications can do this extremely well.
Use dedicated hardware for the Virtual Machines: Whilst it may appear to be a contradiction in terms, running the virtual machine from a dedicated hard disk or RAID Array is probably the most efficient method of running the machine at all. It leads to the minimum of wear on the individual hard disk devices and means that running even simultaneous defragmentation is possible.
How To Sell Your Vintage Antique Lionel Train
It’s human nature to want to know what something you have or have created would be worth if you wanted to sell it. Not that you would ever want to sell something that was dear to you of course, but it’s still nice to know what you have is worth something to somebody and if god forbid that day came, at least you know you won’t get ripped off because you will have all the knowledge you need to make an informed selling decision on the day.
Also, its good to know the value of these things for insurance purposes. I highly suggest that you insure your model trains against theft an fire and any sort of damage possible.
There are three major factors to appraising the worth of your model train collection. Of course the first thing, like any collectible is the rarity of the object in question. Production numbers can be used to do this quite well, but it’s not the only way and probably not always the best way either.
A train is rare if only a few were ever produced, but the price also goes up on supply and demand. If there is no demand for this type of train, then it won’t sell or fetch a high price. So you see, production numbers can be used, but it’s not alway the best way to value you model train or model train collection.
Simple business principles apply here. If there is a high demand for a model train and there are only a few of them around and it’s hard for people to find and buy one that they actually want, then this is where top dollar will be paid to you. It’s only human to want something you can’t have and want, and knowing someone else has that you want and cannot have!
The next factor to look at is the condition the model train is in. Bad condition trains rarely sell for a high price. This is probably not something you will be able to determine yourself especially if you are attached to the train. Try and get an objective opinion from someone you trust and get them to grade the train.
Lionel Trains Grading Values and Price Guide
Below are a list of grading values if you want to value your model train. It’s pretty self explanatory and easy to read. You should be able to find out exactly what your model train is in terms of condition by looking at the guide below. Make sure you also get someone with an objective view on things to have a look at this guide and then view your model train or model train collection.
Mint Condition - This means its more then likely brand new. Must be all original and unused with no marks at all
Factory New - This is used to describe something that is unused and all original parts. It may how ever have a few marks from handling or shipping the item.
Like New - Must have all original parts, but may have slight age marks. No rust at all either.
Excellent: Must have all original parts. Might have a few nicks and scratches, but has no missing parts or distortion of parts.
Very Good: Has some minor scratches or paint damage. May have slight surface rust and may have had some minor parts replaced.
Good: Has been used and looks like it has been used occasionally. May have surface rust and minor dents.
Fair: Scratched and some paint loss. Could be dented have missing parts and will likely have rust on the surface. Looks like its had heavy use
Poor: Major work needed to be done on the body, major scratches, lots of rust and missing parts as well.
Junk: Only useful for parts.
S Scale Model Toy Train - Complete Guide
In this article I am going to be talking to you about the S-scale or the S-gauge model train. This is a model train thats scale is 1:64 in size. It’s popular because it fits between the HO and O model train scales. It can meet the requirements on a scale which is larger then the HO scale, which is considered too small for many hardcore model train fanatics.
It is how ever smaller then the O scale for model trains, which is good because it allows your track layouts to be laid out in a smaller area of space. As we all know, space can be at a premium when it comes to model trains and having space around the home. There is nothing more annoying then having a vision for your model train layout but not having enough room to implement it.
The S-gauge series of model trains has been around for nearly 100 years, but it did not really become popular until the creation of the re designed American Flyer model of trains. These were first produced by a company called A C Gilbert. They were based in Connecticut in the USA in the mid 1930’s. Funnily enough it was one of the companies that was not hit hard by the recession, which just goes to prove how crazy we model railroaders really are!
The American Flyer model train, the train that has become so popular started its life out as a clockwork model train. It then became later an electric train. At this point it was dramatically redesigned to fit its new power mode. Gilbert’s design for the new American Flyer was a huge hit. The American Flyer and the model trains build by A C Gilbert were built on the S-scale, how ever they ran on the O-gauge tracks which were standard at that time.
A decade or so later, A C Gilbert changed it up again. They designed and re designed it. They re designed the tracks for the S-scale model trains. Taking it away from the more traditional 3 track rails which were the ones used in the electric model trains of the day.
In general the three track rail back then would have two outer tracks for the wheels of the model train, and then the 3rd track in the middle would be the one carrying the current from the electricity to power the model trains motor.
The three track model was not very similar to the real thing how ever the two track rails were very similar and become very popular. The two track rails had a more realistic look to them and they made the layouts seem more real. This is because they were starting to look like real train tracks.
These tracks were developed for the smaller S-scale model trains and it allowed the model train tracks to have more realistic layouts with more curves and curves of different radius’s. This was much better to run the popular and newly re designed American Flyer on.
Most of the baby boomer S-scale fanatics would have had their first taste of that scale with the hugely popular American Flyer model train back in the 50’s. This was a very popular Christmas present. At this time, the American Flyer was also competing with another popular model train series, the Lionel model train. These two were the big dogs in the market at the time.
The S-scale model trains are still very popular including the American Flyer. They are rising in popularity with the younger generation. The Lionel company purchased the model train type from the people who purchased the American Flyer from A C Gilbert. The Lionel company was in very deep financial strife in the 60’s and 70’s and it went through many different sets of hands. The Lionel company still operates today, but its a totally different company from what it was.
There are still many different organizations out there today who cater to those who are interested int he S-scale model of trains. There is actually a national association called “The National Association Of S-Gaugers.”
They do have a very active membership with people ranging from all ages. If you Google them you will find their website. They have activities, a newsletter, events they hold and of course suppliers for S-model enthusiasts. They have associations in the US, UK and Australia and probably more but I could not find any. There are even some Yahoo Groups on the subject.
S-scale is still one of the fastest growing scales that is within the model train industry and it’s not going away any time soon. It’s actually growing quicker then any other scale. It works on such less space compared to that of the HO scale. S-scale products are reliable and they are still very accurate.
It might have been a checkered past for the S-scale model train, but it’s not going anywhere soon and its a good way to start with your model train hobby.

Actually, I got pretty lucky… Let me take you back to the early 90’s. I had been doing very basic desktop support and some light Windows NT Administration and one day the main Network Engineer of the company I worked for got in a fight with the boss and he walked out!
My boss was really desperate yet he knew that I had interest in learning Cisco Routers so he sent me to a 5 day Introduction to Cisco Routers course. I am so glad this company was willing to drop $2000 for this course, but I admit that is a HUGE price tag to learn the fundamentals of the Cisco Router. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t complaining.
$30.00 per hour in the early to mid 90’s was a great starting point. I didn’t stop there… I kept learning and growing and ultimately started my own IT Consulting company and now charge at least $100 per hour for Cisco Router consulting.
The main point I want to make is, not everyone has opporunities fall in their lap for a company to drop $2000 for a basic Cisco Router course. I realize that. So what I decided to do was put together the absolute fundamentals that any person needing to learn the Cisco Router needs into one easy to read package at a very affordable price.

I enjoy helping people grow and learn. I wrote another ebook called PIX/ASA Firewall Keys which has helped catapult many people into greater understanding of the PIX Firewall, and with that comes greater income.
One of the things I kept hearing from those who read PIX/ASA Firewall Keys was the request to come up with a very basic guide to the Cisco Router, taught in the same down to earth style. So here it is!
This tutorial is going to teach you the very foundation that you will need to know to make it with the Cisco Router. Once you understand and grasp these concepts you can go on to more advanced routing tutorials.
Of all the comments I get from the readers of my tutorials and ebooks there is one common thing that stands out and this is one that I take great pride in - it is that I break down these concepts in a very simple, down to earth and straightforward way.” Eric S. Severson, author of Cisco Router Keys
